How do you know if a helmet is the right size?

I recognise this Subject title and topic provides SuperC the opportunity to fiddle with himself to within millimetres of taking his own life but just wondered if anyone knew of any science to the topic of correctly fitting motorcycle helmets beyond "Snug fit and Comfortable Over longer periods of time?"

So helmet fit?

Is there a "two fingers under the tightening strap" or " four fingers up the backside of the helmet" garnered wisdom? Or a "no free play around chin" or "any wobbling from side to side around cheeks suggests different size requirement" type of wisdom or advice?

Many thanks

Apart from the measure round your head with a tape measure it all comes down to your head shape as helmets differ a fair bit in shape depending on brand. All seem to settle in after a while but many seem to have areas that seem to be tight and sometimes this is due to the helmet shape rather than fit.

My own personal take on this is to gently push these areas down with finger and thumb pressure just enough to take those high spots away otherwise they are uncomfortable and don't fit your head snug. No particular brand seems to fit me perfectly however I must say the cheap Ghost bike one I bought was very comfortable.

Cheers Paul with science as strong as head lumps I'm off to zippy n bungle for advice. Not that I disagree but I'm trying to appease an irrational - if you know what I mean.

I bought a new lid recently and the only test I recall was the dealer asked me to grasp the helmet at the back and try to roll it forward. If you're close to the lid being peeled off, it's too big.
